Revise intro and outline

This is my revised introduction and an outline for the rest of my essay. I will be talking about the poem "Digging" by Seamus Heaney as I was before but now i will relate the poem through characterization.

In our life we face obstacles with friends and especially our family members everyday. In the poem "Digging" by Seamus Heaney, the author uses characterization to exemplify the struggle that he faces with his family and following his passion. Seamus shows the characters' pride of not following the family traditions and business, his hardworking family, including himself, and having guilt but knowing he needs to follow his dream. Heaney represents the battle of guilt of not wanting to follow the footsteps of the family business to become a writer.

1. Throughout the poem Seamus characterizes the son's pride, the main character, to not follow the family business he sometimes desires.

"Bends low, comes up twenty years away"
"Between my finger and my thumb The squat pen rests: as snug as a gun."
"but I've no spade to follow men like them."

2. Seamus also characterizes a hardworking and devoted grandfather, father, and son that are potato farmers which is a tough line of work.

"By God, the old man could handle a spade, Just like his old man."
"stooping in rhythm through potato drills."
"he rooted put tall tops, buried the bright edge deep To scatter new potatoes that we picked"
       "my father digging,

3. Throughout the poem Seamus characterizes a son who doesn't have the desire to be potato farmer anymore but has tremendous passion to be a writer.

"Through living roots awaken in my head."
"But I've no spade to follow men like them."
"Loving their cool hardness in our hands"
"the squat pen rests. I'll dig with it."

Digging, Spades, and a Pen.

This blog post I am writing is a rough draft introduction paragraph for the essay we are writing this week. I chose to write about symbolism that is portrayed in the poem "Digging" by Seamus Heaney, a poem we have read this year.

In our life we face obstacles with friends, the community, and especially our families everyday. In this poem "Digging" by Seamus Heaney the author uses symbols to represent or stand for something else, to utilize the main idea, and to explain to the reader what the poem is about. In the poem "Digging" by Seamus Heaney, Heaney uses a pen, a spade, and digging to represent the battle and guilt of not wanting to follow the footsteps of the family business to become a writer.

Be Grateful vs Selfsih

Why would people think they were born late? Maybe they wanted to meet someone that has passed from their family or a person who changed history or was famous, or maybe they would enjoy that certain time period more. Well in Minivers' case he "missed the medieval grace of iron clothing"and he"loved the days of old", wanting to live in the Renaissance or medieval ages. I can relate to Miniver in some way by wanting to bring a certain clothing style back that occurred when our parents were born or bring back certain song from the radio at that time, but dreaming about "when swords were bright and steeds were prancing: the vision of a warrior bold"? What I want to know is instead of pretty much regretting to be born, why can't he just recreate the medieval ages in some kind of way. For example maybe wear iron clothing on a daily bases, or have warrior battles with a group of friends, and base his life now as it would have been in the middle ages and not have to believe he was born late or regret living and start living YOUR life as in they way you want to live.

I think Robinson was presenting us using a character who "wept that he was ever born" by telling us to not waste our lives on wishing to live in a different time period but instead go out in the world and succeed in your interests  in life. Also to be grateful and not selfish because Miniver should realize the good things in his life and not escape the world of reality by being induced by alcohol. After reading this poem, it also made me realize how short life can be, taking my life as it comes, have determination in achieving in all my passions, and to just enjoy the life you have now no matter what time period it is...

It's so Ironic..

I think Nadine Gordimer who writes "Once Upon a Time" uses irony in her story to confuses with the readers expectations of how the story ends because ironically the story doesn't end with a happy ending. Throughout the story Gordimer states phrases like "living happily ever after" making the audience believe we are reading a happy story. But we actually are not because the poor little boy dies at the end pretending to be the prince who "braves the terrible thicket of thorns to enter the palace and kiss the Sleeping Beauty back to life" but ends up falling to his death being killed by the fence that his parents put up to protect his family. Which is also ironic because the parents of this little boy were trying to protect him but instead they are the reason why their son is dead. I guess some fairytales don't end happily ever after.

Should I Stay or Should I Go?

Hi my name is Adrianna and this is my blog adriannonomatopoeia. I would have to say my favorite post from summer reading would have to be "Eveline" by James Joyce. I love how the author portrays Eveline as being stuck in a horrible life style and having to deal with her unresponsible, abusive father who doesn't take care of his family after his wife dies. I enjoyed reading about how Eveline remains decisive with her decision if she should escape her life and live with Frank or stay where she has an obligation to her family. It is interesting how she is stuck on what life style to take and she can't decide on her own, she needs someone to choose her own fate. I thought it was very comical when Joyce states "she must escape! Frank would save her. He would give her life, perhaps love, too"pretty much saying she is only going away with Frank to be "saved" and to "escape" from the terrible life she has and using him for what he thinks is love and her bonus is she might eventually fall for him too? It seems she is scared of trying something new and taking a risk and making life decisions which i can definitely relate to and if I were in her shoes I would definitely ask myself should i stay or should i go?
